Falls of Shin is back on the map!

Last weekend, the Falls of Shin celebrated the grand opening of their new community-owned facility with cafe, shop and visitor centre. It’s a wonderful project that received funding after the previous well-known venue was destroyed by a devastating fire in 2013. The creativity and £1.4 million injected into the new tourist attraction has provided a number of jobs and is expected to draw significantly more visitors to the area in coming years.

There’s a real story to tell at the Falls of Shin and the new building is an icon in itself, shaped like a salmon from above to resemble the fish regularly seen leaping at the falls. Generous investment like this is really promising for the local community so the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust wanted to arrange a launch event to put Falls of Shin back on the map in the Highlands.

Local companies, Planit Scotland and Highlander Gatherings & Weddings, were brought on board to plan and deliver a memorable launch of this multi-purpose venue for all generations to enjoy. And what a weekend it was! Youngsters participated in a number of imaginative play activities delivered by Earthtime to rekindle their excitement for nature and the great outdoors. The forestry commission provided taster wood workshops for those that wished to learn and develop their skills. Perhaps the biggest hit was the pop-up marketplace filled with stalls from local vendors showcasing the best of Highland Crafters. Feedback from those who attended the launch event really commended the efforts of organisers and great excitement for the new visitor attraction was voiced on social media.

‘I had the privilege of being in the new cafe and shop at Falls of Shin today before it opens! It looks absolutely stunning. You won’t be disappointed! It will be a great family day out with a play park, mini golf, retail therapy and locally sourced produce in the restaurant’.

The Falls of Shin is open 10:00 – 16:00 daily, and is available as a multi-purpose venue on request. Pop along when you get the chance, it’s really worth a visit!
